Mobile Development in progress.

Wood has been responsible for shaping our past and used for as long as man has walked the earth; for basic shelter, tools and transport and developed throughout our history for uses as diverse as warships and violins.

Stock Holding

Sykes Timber maintains one of the largest and most diverse timber stock holdings in the UK, with around 80 species kept undercover and in substantial quantities. Careful storage and handling allow timber to be properly conditioned and selected, ensuring consistency and reliability across both regular supply and larger project requirements. The depth and range of stock enable customers to source material with confidence, supported by availability across a wide selection of sizes, grades and specifications.

Support & Advice

At Sykes Timber, customers deal directly with experienced staff who understand the practical requirements of working with timber across a wide range of industries. Advice is based on how material performs in real applications — including movement, durability, machinability and long-term stability. Our Timber Specification Centre further supports this process, allowing customers to review species and discuss suitability in a practical, informed environment.

We supply timber to a diverse customer base, from joinery manufacturers and furniture makers to specialist sectors such as boat building, musical instrument manufacture and restoration work. Each application brings different demands, and our role is to help customers select species and grades that are appropriate for both the environment and the intended use.

Whether sourcing a specific material, matching existing work, or planning long-term supply, our team provides straightforward, practical guidance built on experience and a long-term understanding of timber in use.

Timber Selection & Grading

At Sykes Timber, selection and grading are central to maintaining consistent quality. Timber is assessed by experienced staff who understand how material will perform in manufacture, not simply how it meets a written specification. Colour, grain, structure and natural variation are carefully considered to ensure timber is suitable for its intended use.

In addition to visual selection and grading, Sykes Timber is able to carry out structural grading where required, supplying timber suitable for structural applications in accordance with recognised grading standards.

By combining traditional grading knowledge with an understanding of modern joinery and manufacturing requirements, we supply timber that is reliable, consistent and ready for purpose

Machining

Sykes Timber offers a comprehensive machining and finishing service, allowing timber to be supplied ready for use in manufacture or installation. Machining is carried out with accuracy and consistency, reducing preparation time and improving efficiency within our customers’ own workshops.

Services include planing, sizing and finishing to customer specification, ensuring material is supplied in a form suited to its intended application. By combining quality timber with precise machining, we help maintain consistency across projects and reduce unnecessary waste.

In addition, Sykes Timber machines constructional veneers to order, from 2mm thickness and upwards, produced to suit individual requirements.

Delivery

Sykes Timber delivers throughout the UK and further afield, with a focus on reliability. Deliveries are carefully planned to ensure timber arrives on time and in the condition expected, whether supplying regular orders or larger project requirements. Our experience in handling and transporting timber allows material to be delivered efficiently and dependably, supporting customers who rely on accurate timing within their own production or installation schedules.

Bespoke Sourcing

Alongside an extensive and varied stock range, Sykes Timber is able to assist with bespoke sourcing where projects require material outside standard sizes or specifications. Through a wide network of long-established contacts within the timber trade, we can source selected material to meet more demanding requirements.

For larger or more specialised projects, this can include sourcing individual logs or selected parcels where unusual dimensions, wider boards or heavier sections are required. Material can then be processed to suit the needs of the project, ensuring consistency and suitability where standard stock may not provide the desired result.

This approach allows Sykes Timber to support projects where scale, specification or design place greater demands on the timber being supplied, while maintaining the same focus on quality and practicality expected across our regular stock.
