European Elm

One of the most beautiful native and European hardwoods with a variable often interlocked grain and a unique figure caused by wavy rows of latewood vessels. Elm is light grey to medium reddish brown in colour, quite variable, and is a medium to high movement timber, although very resistant to splitting. Traditional uses include Windsor chair seats, Cartwheel-hubs, Coffins and Country style furniture. Elm is non durable, unless fully immersed in water, but is used for boat planking and waney edged cladding.
